About: The Barcelona Education Consortium is a public organization established by the regional government of Catalonia and the Barcelona City Council, which oversees the education system in the city of Barcelona. The Consortium establishes the standards, policies, goals, and initiatives to ensure the equality and quality of education in Barcelona for 291 schools. The newly formed K-12 Rec Comtal School, located in Trinitat Vella, serves one of the most marginalized neighborhoods in Barcelona with a high population of Pakistani, Moroccan, and Ecuadorian families, creating a school community in which 70% of the students are foreign-born and/or recently arrived.

The selected Fulbright participant will be hosted at the Barcelona Education Consortium.

Project Information

Background: Starting in September 2021, the Rec Comtal School is launching an innovative new project whereby STEAM and thinking-based learning will be infused into all curricula, subject matters, and academic coursework. This new project will be implemented over a three-year period and will focus on taking an interdisciplinary approach to promoting a range of learning activities in which STEAM subjects connect with the other school subjects. Thinking-Based Learning and Learning-by-Doing will be key components of the new pedagogical methodology employed to realize this project.

Goals: The Fulbright DAST participant will share their expertise in STEAM, Thinking-Based Learning, and Learning-by-Doing with the Rec Comtal School leadership team, teachers, and educational advisors at the Consortium in order to develop the project, successfully implement it, and assess its performance. Furthermore, the Fulbright DAST participant will connect the Rec Comtal School with STEAM programs at schools and organizations in the United States in order to help globalize the Rec Comtal School.

Activities: Leading seminars, workshops or other teacher professional development for educators; conducting needs assessments, surveys, institutional or programmatic research; developing academic curricula or educational materials; advising Ministry of Education or other educational institutions on educational policies and projects or participating in educational consultations
