Project Information

Background: English language proficiency is becoming increasingly important in Vietnam as a way for students to integrate with the rest of the world in an advanced and modern way. Vietnam’s National Foreign Language 2020 Project, initiated by the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training, aims to improve instruction of and in foreign languages (primarily English) within all schools in the country. In an effort to reach this goal, policies have been adjusted so that students are required to begin learning English at the 1st grade level and educators are required to teach all subjects in English. Despite these efforts, many schools, especially those in rural areas, are not receiving the training or resources necessary to excel. There are limited professional development opportunities for STEM educators, in addition to limited access and exposure to the English language.

Goals: The U.S. STEM specialists will help the Le Quy Don Gifted High School and the Nguyen Tat Thanh Gifted High School strengthen their STEM educators’ teaching abilities in English. The U.S. STEM specialists will carry out workshops and seminars that focus on improving the STEM educators’ ability to design curriculum in English and teach in modern methods in English. The U.S. STEM specialists will also share effective and reliable STEM teaching resources and materials. As a byproduct, the STEM educators will improve their ability to carry out their lessons in English.
