Mary Jo West, a Virginia high school music educator and current Fulbright Teacher Exchange participant recently spoke with the International Baccalaureate Organization about how her Fulbright experience has influenced her perspective on teaching and learning. “My definition of an international education has radically changed and grown. [It] is now the most crucial aspect of my teaching; it goes beyond mastery of academic content and 21st century cognitive skills...Global competency and social emotional wellness are integrated.”

West is working on several projects stemming from her Fulbright experience, including writing lessons aimed at empowering students to be agents of change through music, building a professional learning network of International Baccalaureate music teachers, and facilitating the World of Music project with iEARN India. She says that “the opportunity to look at global education through a vibrant focused lens with a cohort of outstanding teachers is truly a life-changing experience.”
